I live on the East Coast of Australia. I was born in Victoria and grew up in the beautiful region of Gippsland, and my love for food exploded when I moved to the foodie heaven of Melbourne, just before this blog came into existence.
Truth be told, when I met my husband, my true food affair began.
The sole reason for my cooking endeavors was to please him and woo him off his feet, and it has become an addictive past time. After all, isn't the way to a man's heart through his stomach?
My enjoyment in baking comes solely through others. I revel in sheer delight watching someone dig their teeth into one of those rich, moist brownies, or that unsuspecting soul who discovers strawberry jam running down their fingers in a surprising doughnut explosion.
I have no professional training in the culinary arts, and hence I am what I like to call highly experimental. I have my fair share of burnt bottoms, flat meringues and not-so-natural kitchen disasters. Amidst the occasional smokey kitchen arises some delicious morsels I like to share, and so, Lick The Spoon has come to be.
I often get two questions.
1. Where do you find the time to cook and blog as a mother?
2. Where to you put away all that food?
Interesting and valid questions, both. Firstly, when you love something, or need to do something, you find time for it against all odds. I suppose it all comes down to prioritizing, re-prioritizing and ignoring some things you could and maybe should be doing instead. Dishes first, or a little moment to recollect my fading sanity? (I live by the "happy mother, happy children" policy) The kids also enjoy helping me out in the kitchen at times, so it's a nice way to spend time with them too. Fortunately cooking is one of those things you have to do to live anyway, so I work the need to eat and cook in with the need to blog. Blogging for me is my hobby, my time to be by myself and have a break from the housework and just relax. It's often stolen moments through the day where I jump onto my computer and write a sentence or two, and then I'm called away by a little voice. I don't have the time I would like to put the detail I want into my blog, food and photography, but I'm a determined woman! Close enough sometimes is good enough.
Actually, it may come as a surprise, but we don't eat many of my baked goods around here. Often I will jump at the opportunity to cook for a party, or when I have visitors coming over, or when we're to be guests at a dinner party. Occasionally the food gets shipped off to my husbands work. So we share a lot. I suppose you could say I'm sharing the fat around! So now you know, I don't just sit there gorging on everything I make. I wouldn't be able to bake if I did that (that's the sole reason I refrain of course.)
Now a little introduction, and a big thanks. My darling husband Luke is my rock, and supports me in my foodie adventures. He not only fuels my food-ego (which makes me bake more and blog more) but he also funds my great shopping splurges for ingredients. He is my reason for creating and putting so much love into what I do.
I also have to thank my little son Benjamin and daughters Vienna and Cecelia for being some of my biggest fans, and having patience with me while I'm in the kitchen. Cooking just wouldn't be the same without them. They tend to either smear, spill or devour half my ingredients before I can get to them.
And a whopping thank you to all my guinea pigs (my in-laws mainly) for being the ones to cop my inventions, some laughable failures and my successes as well. It's overwhelming that people are willing to stick their necks out to support my blog also. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You keep me, and all my beloveds, licking the spoon.
Nice to meet you, Louise! I too have a serious sweet tooth (or twenty)! I agree wholeheartedly with the 'everything in moderation' type philosophy. I loved your personalized Easter eggs and look forward to more of your goodies! Christina @ Christina's Cucina :)
ReplyDeletethanks so much for your comment and for coming by Christina! Glad to meet a fellow sweet tooth :D
DeleteI love reading your blog, Louise! You post yummy goodness that I pin to my Pinterest boards and dream of having time to bake. Where did you learn how to decorate cakes? The blue baby cake you made recently was gorgeous! How did you make the lace on that cake? Thanks for blogging. This girl love to read your stuff!
ReplyDeleteHi Kristine! thanks for taking the time to visit my blog:) your very kind! I am in the process of teaching myself to decorate cakes. You tube has been a great source of information to me. I still have a way to go before I am where I want to be with cake decorating, but your words have been a source of encouragement! I am glad you liked the christening cake. The lace was made with sugar veil, a relatively new medium for creating edible lace detail. God Bless! thanks for your comment and for reading!
ReplyDeleteHi, Louise! I "met' you on a Facebook group, Home Organization with ABFOL. I think you are a kindred spirit except you are light years ahead of me, I'm sure, with your food creations. I aspire to be a tea room owner, a chef, a sweet shop owner or all of the above. My husband has always said about us that we have a good food relationship because he knows that I enjoy cooking and he likes to eat! :) I look forward to exploring your blog! (you and your family are beautiful!) Sarah C. from Tennessee!
